Ernst Leitz had always been a rangefinder company at heart. The Leica M system, perfected across a decade and a half by 1964, was producing cameras that photographers of the highest order trusted absolutely. The move into single-lens reflex territory was therefore cautious — almost reluctant — and the Leicaflex, announced that year, bore the hallmarks of a first attempt: beautifully built, optically excellent, but mechanically conservative in ways that would soon feel dated.
What followed across the next 45 years was not a story of consistent momentum, but of careful evolution, occasional missteps, productive collaboration, and a genuine final flowering in the R8 and R9 bodies that produced cameras genuinely worthy of the lenses they carried. Here is the full account.

1964 – 1968
Leicaflex (Standard)
The original, sometimes called the "Standard" to distinguish it from the SL. A fully mechanical 35mm SLR with a 1/2000s top speed and stop-down metering only — meaning you stopped the aperture down manually to take a reading, then opened it again for viewing. The viewfinder was large and bright, the build quality impeccable, but the metering system was already behind the competition. Lenses from this era carry a single metering cam and require stop-down metering on all later bodies.
1968 – 1974
Leicaflex SL
The first significant step forward: open-aperture TTL metering arrived, meaning the meter now reads with the lens wide open and calculates the correct exposure without requiring the aperture to be closed. Lenses gained a second metering cam to support this. The SL also featured a superb viewfinder with a 0.8× magnification — still spoken of with reverence — and a selective-area metering pattern that anticipated later developments by several years. Mechanically identical to the Standard in most respects, the SL was the model that established the R system's reputation.
1974 – 1976
Leicaflex SL2
A refinement of the SL rather than a redesign, the SL2 brought improved metering sensitivity and a hot shoe. More significantly, the mirror damping was improved to reduce vibration, benefiting longer exposures and telephoto work. The SL2 is the most desirable of the Leicaflex-era bodies; its clean lines, superb finder, and full mechanical independence from electronics make it a landmark camera. Production was relatively limited, making clean examples hard to find.
1976 – 1979
Leica R3
Here began the most controversial chapter of the R system's history. Facing the cost and engineering challenge of developing a modern, electronically controlled body from scratch, Leitz entered a co-development agreement with Minolta. The R3 was built on the Minolta XE platform — a well-regarded camera in its own right — rehoused in Leica cosmetics and fitted with the R-mount. The result was the first R body with aperture-priority automatic exposure and the first to carry three metering cams. Leica enthusiasts have always been divided on the collaboration. The R3 is capable and reliable, but distinctly less "Leica" in its mechanical character than what came before or after.
1980 – 1983
Leica R4
The R4, based on the Minolta XD platform, expanded automatic exposure to include program, shutter-priority, and aperture-priority modes alongside manual control — making it the most versatile R body to date. It also introduced a self-timer and OTF (off-the-film) flash metering. For photographers who wanted automation, the R4 delivered; for purists, it felt too far from Leica's mechanical roots. Several variants followed: the R4s (simplified), R4s Mod 2, all sharing the same underlying architecture.
1983 – 1986
Leica R5
An evolution of the R4, the R5 added TTL flash metering with dedicated Leica flash units and improved the program mode. The body was mechanically almost identical to the R4 but with refined electronics. It occupies a comfortable middle ground — more capable than its predecessor, not yet fully Leica in conception, but honest and reliable in use.
1987 – 1992
Leica R6
The R6 marked a deliberate return to Leica's mechanical values. Abandoning the Minolta collaboration, Leitz developed a fully mechanical shutter entirely in-house. The battery — required only for the exposure meter — became non-essential for camera operation. Lose it and the camera still fires at any shutter speed. The viewfinder was redesigned and the overall handling refined. The R6 is the camera many serious R-system photographers consider the first truly modern expression of what the system should be.
1988 – 1997
Leica R7
Running alongside the R6, the R7 brought electronic shutter operation back — but now as a Leica-developed system rather than a Minolta one. Aperture-priority and program modes returned, alongside an improved matrix-style metering pattern. The R7 is the versatile counterpart to the R6's purity: more capable in terms of automation, but dependent on batteries for shutter operation. It remains an underrated body, often overshadowed by the R6.2 and R8 on either side of it.
1992 – 1998
Leica R6.2
A refinement of the R6 with improved metering sensitivity (EV 1–19 vs EV 2–18) and a lighter, more precise shutter release. The R6.2 is the culmination of the mechanical R concept: fully independent of electronics, 1/2000s top speed, and a viewfinder that remains a pleasure to use. It commands a premium on the used market for good reason.
1996 – 2002
Leica R8
The R8 was a dramatic departure in design — a large, almost aggressively sculptural body that divided opinion sharply on its release. Underneath the controversial styling was Leica's most capable R body to date: multi-field metering, multiple exposure modes, a 1/8000s top speed with the electronic shutter, and a viewfinder of exceptional quality. It also introduced compatibility with the later Digital Modul R back, giving the camera a path into early digital capture. Time has been kind to the R8: its ergonomics are, for many hands, the finest of any R body.
2002 – 2009
Leica R9
The final R body, and an evolution of the R8 with colour options (black chrome and silver chrome), minor ergonomic refinements, and compatibility with the Digital Modul R — a 10-megapixel digital back that converted the R9 into an early digital camera using the full R lens lineup. Production ended in 2009. No successor was announced. The R system closed as it had opened: with a camera that was beautifully made, capable, and slightly outside the mainstream of photography — which, for its devoted community, was precisely the point.
What the Lineage Tells Us
The R system's history is one of a company that knew what it wanted to make but was not always certain how to make it. The early Minolta collaboration was a pragmatic response to competitive pressure; the return to mechanical values with the R6 was a reassertion of identity. The R8 and R9, whatever one thinks of their styling, demonstrated that Leica had found its footing as a camera manufacturer rather than a lens manufacturer with a camera attached.
What endures from all of it is the lens mount. A 1-cam Super-Angulon-R from 1968 still mounts on an R9 from 2005, and the lenses made at every point in the system's production remain optically relevant today, whether on film bodies or adapted to modern mirrorless systems. That consistency of purpose across 45 years is the R system's most remarkable achievement.
