Most R-mount cameras in circulation today are between 25 and 60 years old. That is a long time for any precision mechanical instrument, particularly one that may have spent some of those decades unused in a cupboard, a dry environment that cracks foam seals, or a damp one that encourages fungal growth on glass. The remarkable thing is not that these cameras sometimes need attention — it is that most of them still work at all, and work well, which is a testament to the build quality that Leitz and later Leica brought to their production.
This guide covers what you can reasonably do at home without specialised equipment or deep mechanical knowledge, and equally importantly, what you should not attempt without professional training. Understanding that boundary is as important as any specific technique described here.
The Golden Rule: Know What You Are Doing Before You Start
Leica R-mount cameras, particularly the electronic bodies from the R3 onward, contain precision-adjusted components that can be permanently damaged by well-intentioned but uninformed intervention. A shutter that runs slightly fast is a candidate for a professional CLA; a shutter that has been prodded with a cotton bud is a candidate for replacement. Before touching anything inside the camera, be clear on what you are trying to achieve, understand what you are looking at, and have a realistic assessment of whether you are the right person to do it.
The tasks described in this guide are those that experienced amateur photographers routinely perform without risk of causing additional damage. They are limited to cleaning, inspection, light seal replacement, and general preventive maintenance. They deliberately exclude shutter adjustment, lubrication of the helicoid or mirror mechanism, electronic fault diagnosis, and anything requiring removal of the top plate or bottom cover. Those require specialist knowledge and, often, specialist tools that most photographers do not own.
What You Will Need
For basic home maintenance of an R-mount camera, the following supplies cover most situations:
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), 99% purity. Used for removing old foam seal residue. Do not use lower-purity IPA; the water content can damage coatings and leave residues.
- Foam seal replacement kits. Available from specialist suppliers (SKgrimes, Interslice, and others) cut to size for specific camera models. Buy pre-cut kits specific to your R-mount body if available; generic foam strip requires more careful sizing.
- Lint-free swabs and microfibre cloths. Standard cotton buds leave fibres; use purpose-made lint-free swabs for anything near the shutter or film gate.
- A soft brush. A clean, dry watercolour brush (size 2 or 3) is ideal for dusting the film chamber and mirror box.
- A loupe or magnifier (10×). Essential for inspecting seals, the shutter curtain, and glass surfaces in detail.
- Compressed air (canned). For removing loose dust from the mirror box and film gate. Use short, controlled bursts from at least 20cm distance — never aim directly at the shutter curtain.
- A LED torch. A bright, narrow-beam LED is invaluable for illuminating the interior of the camera during inspection.
- A blower brush. A rubber squeeze-type blower (without the brush tip) for gentle air movement near sensitive surfaces where canned air would be too forceful.
Light Seal Inspection and Replacement
Light seals are the most common maintenance issue on any film camera of this age. The foam used in most cameras from the 1960s through the 1990s degrades over time into a sticky, crumbling mess that can no longer block light effectively and can deposit black residue on the film gate, pressure plate, or — in the worst cases — on the shutter curtain itself.
To inspect the seals, open the camera back in subdued light (not bright sunlight) and examine the channels around the perimeter of the film gate, the door hinge edge, and the mirror box surround. Healthy seals are soft, springy, and black. Degraded seals are sticky, crumbling, compressed flat, or simply absent — leaving bare metal channels with black residue at the edges. The hinge seal on the door edge is particularly prone to degradation because it bears pressure each time the door closes.
If the seals need replacement, proceed as follows:
- With the camera back open, use a dry swab to remove loose foam debris from the seal channels. Work gently and do not push debris toward the shutter.
- Dampen a swab with 99% IPA and carefully clean the seal channels, removing the adhesive residue left by the old foam. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.
- Do not allow IPA to contact the shutter curtain, mirror, or any optical surfaces. Use a dry swab or blower to protect these areas if working nearby.
- Cut replacement foam to the correct size using your pre-cut kit or, if using generic strip, match the depth and width of the original channels precisely. Too-thick foam will prevent the back from closing properly; too-thin foam will not block light.
- Remove the backing from the self-adhesive foam and press firmly into the channel. The adhesive on quality replacement foam is strong; position it correctly before pressing.
- Allow 24 hours before loading film, to ensure the adhesive has fully cured.
After replacement, test with a sacrificial roll of film — shoot it fully and check the developed negatives for any light leaks before relying on the camera for important work.
Cleaning the Viewfinder
The viewfinder of an R-mount camera accumulates dust, and the eyepiece lens is particularly prone to fingerprint smears and general grime. Cleaning the external eyepiece lens is straightforward and low-risk. Cleaning the internal condenser lens and the focusing screen is more involved and carries more risk.
Eyepiece (external): Breathe gently on the lens to produce a brief fog, then wipe in a single circular motion with a clean microfibre cloth or lens tissue. For more stubborn marks, a single drop of IPA on the cloth — never directly on the lens — applied with light pressure works well. Avoid circular scrubbing motions, which can introduce fine scratches to older coatings.
Focusing screen: The focusing screen sits at the top of the mirror box and collects fine dust that shows as dark specks visible when looking through the finder. The screen is accessible from below once the mirror is locked up (on bodies with mirror lock-up) or gently held out of the way. Use a dry blower brush only — never IPA or any liquid on a focusing screen, as the matte surface is porous and permanently damaged by solvents. If dust cannot be removed with air alone, the screen should be removed entirely for cleaning. This is a task most photographers leave to a technician on first attempt, as screens scratch very easily.
Cleaning the Mirror
The reflex mirror in an R-mount camera is a first-surface mirror — the reflective coating is on the front surface of the glass, not behind it as in conventional mirrors. This makes it more sensitive to cleaning than an ordinary mirror and much more sensitive than the rear element of a lens. First-surface mirrors should ideally be cleaned only with a dry blower or very gentle dry brush, never with liquids.
Fingerprints on a first-surface mirror do affect image quality — the mirror's job is to reflect the image into the viewfinder, and a contaminated mirror surface produces a dim, degraded finder image. If cleaning with air alone is insufficient, dampen a lint-free swab with lens cleaning fluid (not IPA) and touch it very lightly to the mirror surface in a single straight stroke from centre to edge, without dragging back. Use a fresh swab for each stroke. This approach minimises the risk of scratch damage, but even careful cleaning carries some risk, and a scratched mirror is an expensive item to replace.
Cleaning the Film Gate
The film gate — the rectangular aperture through which light passes to expose the film — needs to be free of dust and debris for sharp images. Dust particles in the gate create consistently positioned dark spots on every frame, which is how you distinguish gate contamination from random dust on the film or in the enlarger.
To clean the gate, use canned air in short bursts to dislodge loose particles, followed by a dry lint-free swab to remove any remaining debris from the gate edges. The sharp metal edges of the gate can be wiped carefully with a swab dampened with IPA — but keep the IPA strictly away from the shutter curtain, which runs immediately behind the gate. Never insert any rigid tool into the film gate.
Battery Maintenance
The metering systems in R-mount cameras from the SL through to the R9 require batteries to function, and the correct battery chemistry matters. Several older R bodies were designed for mercury batteries (the PX625 and similar), which produced a constant 1.35V throughout their discharge cycle. Modern zinc-air or alkaline replacements produce a slightly higher initial voltage and a different discharge curve, which can cause the meter to read slightly high and produce underexposed negatives if the difference is not corrected.
For the R3 through R7 bodies, which use SR44 or LR44 cells at 1.5V, a modern alkaline or silver oxide replacement is a direct fit and the voltage difference is small enough to be within the meter's calibration tolerance for most purposes. For the original Leicaflex SL and SL2, which used the 1.35V mercury cell, a Wein MRB625 zinc-air replacement is the most commonly recommended solution — it produces a voltage close to the original 1.35V, though zinc-air cells have a limited lifespan once the seal is removed (typically 1–4 months of active use) and must be stored with the seal intact.
- Always remove batteries from a camera that will be stored for more than a month, to prevent corrosion if a cell leaks
- If you find battery corrosion in a compartment, clean it carefully with a dry cotton bud — the deposits are alkaline and can be neutralised with a tiny amount of white vinegar on a swab, followed by thorough drying
- Always test the meter against a known reference (a handheld light meter or a smartphone metering app) before relying on a camera whose battery type you have just changed
Storage
Proper storage extends the life of any camera dramatically. For R-mount cameras not in regular use, the following practices are worth establishing:
- Store at moderate humidity. Both extremes are damaging — very dry air cracks foam and lubricants; high humidity encourages fungal growth on glass. A humidity of 40–50% is ideal.
- Store with the shutter uncocked. Leaving a mechanical shutter under tension for extended periods can weaken the shutter springs over time, affecting shutter speed accuracy.
- Remove batteries. As noted above, a leaking battery is one of the most damaging things that can happen to a camera body during storage, and it is entirely preventable.
- Store with caps on. Both the body cap and rear lens cap should be in place on any camera stored for more than a few days, to prevent dust accumulation in the mirror box and on the rear element.
- Do not store in camera bags for long periods. Many camera bags contain off-gassing foam padding that produces acetic acid vapour over time, which is corrosive to optical coatings and camera electronics.
When to Send for Professional Service
Home maintenance has clear limits, and knowing when you have reached them is as important as knowing how to replace a light seal. The following conditions call for professional service:
- Shutter speed inaccuracy. If your negatives are consistently over- or underexposed when shooting on manual settings, and the meter and exposure settings are correct, the shutter speeds may need calibration. This requires a shutter tester and adjustment tools; it is not a home task.
- Mirror mechanism problems. A mirror that doesn't return completely after exposure, or that vibrates visibly in the finder, indicates mechanical issues with the mirror damping or return spring that should be inspected by a technician.
- Electronic faults on R3–R7 bodies. Intermittent metering, failure of the shutter to fire at the correct speed in automatic modes, or unexplained battery drain all indicate electronic faults. These require specialist diagnosis and cannot be remediated at home.
- Fungal growth on internal glass elements. Fungus on a rear element or between elements requires element separation for cleaning, which requires precision alignment on reassembly. This is a workshop job without exception.
- Any camera purchased for serious use that hasn't been serviced recently. If you have acquired a camera without service history and intend to shoot with it regularly, a professional CLA is money well spent. It provides confidence, documents the camera's condition, and sets a baseline for future maintenance.
