The rehousing companies have been frank about why the glass is worth this considerable investment. GL Optics notes that Leitz glass and its coating technique share much with the sister line of cine lenses produced by Ernst Leitz Canada — the ELCAN lenses that were developed into the Panavision Primo primes, which debuted in 1986 and became a benchmark of Hollywood cinematography. The R-mount lenses, in other words, share optical DNA with lenses that professional cinematographers already trusted implicitly.
Shane Hurlbut ASC and Need for Speed
Among working cinematographers, Shane Hurlbut ASC — a member of the American Society of Cinematographers with credits including Terminator: Salvation, We Are Marshall, and the first season of AMC's Into the Badlands — has been one of the most publicly articulate advocates for R-mount glass in professional production. Hurlbut used Leica R lenses across 13 of the first 15 films he shot, citing their flatness of contrast as the defining practical advantage: they seemed to give me the most, because they have a flatter look than the other still lenses, he has written. The 2014 action film Need for Speed, directed by Scott Waugh and photographed by Hurlbut on ARRI ALEXA cameras, is one of the most prominent mainstream productions to have used Leica R series lenses as part of its optical package. The film's lens list includes the Leica Elmarit-R II 28mm f/2.0, Super Angulon-R 21mm f/4.0, and Super-Elmarit-R 15mm f/2.8 alongside Cooke spherical and zoom lenses. Pleasant skin tones, a beautiful highlight roll-off. The film In Flames, a psychological horror set in Karachi, also chose Leica R primes for their low contrast and warm tones in daylight scenes, with green accents for night — precisely the kind of subtle, location-responsive colour language that a more clinically corrected modern lens would not as readily support.
Also at Cannes 2023, French DoP Rémy Chevrin used the Leica Summilux for On a Magical Night, shot on 35mm film, citing the texture of the skin in close-up as the specific quality the Summilux delivered that justified the choice. More recently, the 2025 Academy Award-nominated feature The Brutalist, photographed by Lol Crawley BSC, listed Leica R lenses among its optical package alongside Cooke S4/i primes — another example of R-mount glass used selectively within a broader professional package.
The Leica Glow
Cinematographers who use R-mount glass consistently reach for similar language when describing what the lenses do that modern alternatives do not. The term that recurs most frequently is the "Leica glow" — a quality in the out-of-focus rendering, particularly in highlights, that is distinct from the bokeh of most competing optics.
The Leica glow is not a defect or a softness. It is a precise optical characteristic rooted in the way Leica's lens designs handle the transition between the plane of sharp focus and the out-of-focus areas that surround it. Modern cinema lenses and current-production stills lenses are typically optimised to make this transition as clean and neutral as possible — to render out-of-focus areas with uniform, predictable blur circles. Leica R lenses, particularly the Summilux primes at f/1.4 wide open, render this transition differently: highlights in the out-of-focus background and foreground have a gentle luminosity — a warmth and slight bloom — that contributes to the three-dimensional quality that cinematographers describe as making subjects seem to emerge from the frame rather than simply being depicted within it.
This quality is most visible in portraiture and close-up work. It is what the French DoP meant when he wrote about the skin texture in close-up and the beautiful fall-off. It is what the GL Optics reviewer described as warmth and creaminess that renders faces very pleasantly. And it is what Hurlbut identified when he noted the greater latitude that Leica glass provides in post — the glow in highlights is more easily managed in colour grading than the clipped, hard highlights that high-contrast lenses can produce.
Wide open, R-mount lenses can also produce chromatic aberration and unique imperfections that some cinematographers actively seek out. Once stopped down, they hold their own against sharper, more modern lenses. This range of character — from painterly at f/1.4 to precise at f/4 and beyond — is part of what makes them genuinely useful creative tools rather than simply aged alternatives to better-specified modern glass.
Practical Advantages for Professional Use
Beyond the optical character, R-mount lenses offer several practical attributes that suit professional film production specifically. The all-metal construction tolerates the demanding environments of location shooting in ways that the lightweight plastic-barrel autofocus lenses of the DSLR era do not. The large focus throw — the angular distance the focus ring travels from its minimum to its infinity position — allows a focus puller to make precise, controlled adjustments during a shot, a requirement that consumer lenses with their short, motor-optimised throws cannot reliably meet. And the lens-controlled aperture ring, once de-clicked, provides smooth iris control that is critical when adjusting exposure during a take.
The weight and density of the lenses, which photographers sometimes consider a disadvantage for handheld stills shooting, becomes an asset in cinema use: the gyroscopic stability of a heavier lens on a gimbal or steadicam is better than a light one, reducing micro-vibration in the image. Multiple cinematographers working with rehoused Leica R sets have noted their compact build as an additional advantage — for handheld and gimbal operating in tight locations, the combination of small physical size and professional optical quality is difficult to replicate with comparable purpose-built cinema glass.
