The Leica R-mount system was produced across 45 years and nine distinct body generations, from the fully mechanical Leicaflex SL of 1968 to the electronically sophisticated R9 of 2009. Every one of these bodies is now a used item, and every one has strengths and weaknesses that are worth understanding before you buy. This guide is intended for photographers approaching the system for the first time, whether the intention is to shoot film on a classic Leica body, to use R-mount glass on a modern mirrorless camera, or both.
What Kind of Buyer Are You?
Before comparing specific bodies, it is worth being clear about your primary use case, because it dramatically affects which body makes most sense.
Buying for film shooting. If you intend to shoot film on the camera, the body's mechanical and electronic condition matters enormously. You need a camera whose shutter fires accurately at calibrated speeds, whose meter reads correctly, and whose light seals do not fog the film. Budget for a CLA if you cannot verify service history.
Buying for the lenses. If your primary interest is using R-mount lenses on a modern mirrorless camera via adapter, the body condition matters much less — even a camera with a dead meter or stiff advance lever will serve as an adequate "lens holder" to confirm the lens's optical quality. In this case, buying the cheapest working body you can find is entirely rational.
Buying for both. Most photographers entering the system want the flexibility of shooting film when the mood suits and adapting lenses to their mirrorless camera the rest of the time. In this case, the body selection matters, but perfection is not essential — a well-serviced R6.2 or R5 at a reasonable price is more useful than a mint R9 at a premium that leaves no budget for lenses.
Body-by-Body Guide
Leicaflex SL & SL2
1968–1976Fully mechanical, superb viewfinder, built to standards not seen since. No electronic components to fail. Battery only for the meter, which uses a now-obsolete mercury cell voltage (use Wein MRB625 replacement).
The SL2 is preferred for its improved metering and mirror damping. Watch for viewfinder fungus and stiff focus screens.

1976–1979Minolta XE-based, electronic shutter. Generally reliable at this stage — the survivors have passed the test of time. First R body with aperture priority and 3-cam lens support.
Check the electronics work at all speeds. Affordable entry point into the system for adapting purposes.

1980–1983Documented electronic reliability issues in early production. A camera that still works after 40+ years is likely fine, but cannot be assumed to be without confirmation.
The R4s (simplified) and later R4 production are more reliable. Verify all metering modes function before buying.

1992–1997Last and most capable of the Minolta-derived electronic bodies. Full TTL flash automation, digital shutter display. Electronically sound; taller than R5/R6 due to expanded base for extra circuitry.
An underrated body — often available at lower prices than its capability justifies.

1996–2002First in-house Leica design. Multi-pattern metering, 1/8000s shutter, mirror lock-up. Large and heavy. Early production had documented winder contact issues — check this has been addressed.

Regardless of which body you are considering, the following inspection checklist applies to every R-mount camera. Sellers at reputable dealers will permit and often facilitate this inspection; private sellers vary, but a seller unwilling to allow basic inspection of a camera being sold as working is a red flag.
The Shutter
The shutter is the heart of any film camera, and its condition is the most important single factor in a buying decision. With the lens removed and the back open, look through the shutter at a light source and fire the shutter at various speeds while watching the curtain travel.
At 1/1000s and 1/2000s, the shutter curtain should open and close so quickly that you see only a brief flash of light — if you can see the curtain travel across the frame, the shutter is running too slowly at these speeds. At 1s and 1/2s, you should be able to count the opening duration and confirm it is approximately correct. At B (Bulb), the shutter should stay open for precisely as long as the release is depressed and close immediately on release.
Listen as well as look. A shutter running at correct speed has a crisp, consistent sound at each speed; a shutter with worn or unevenly lubricated curtain runners sounds inconsistent between identical speeds, or has a slightly sluggish quality at slow speeds. Inconsistency is a sign that calibration work is needed.
For mechanical bodies (SL, SL2, R6, R6.2), remove the battery if one is present and check that the shutter fires correctly without it. This is one of the defining features of these bodies and should work flawlessly.
The Meter
Installing a known-good battery, point the camera at a uniform mid-toned surface (a grey wall, or a printed 18% grey card) and check the meter response. With the aperture set at a mid-range value (f/5.6) and the ISO dial correctly set for your test conditions, the meter needle or display should indicate correct exposure at a predictable shutter speed — you can cross-reference against a smartphone camera meter for a rough check.
More importantly, change the aperture to f/2.8 and back to f/8, and verify the meter responds proportionally to these changes. A meter that sticks, fluctuates randomly, or fails to respond is either in need of cleaning or has a more serious electronic fault.
The Viewfinder
Look through the viewfinder with a bright subject in front of the lens and check for haze, fungus, and dust. Some dust on the focusing screen is normal and has no effect on image quality — it does not appear on photographs. However, fungal growth on the eyepiece lens or the condenser lens above the focusing screen does affect finder brightness and clarity, and is worth negotiating over in the price.
On the Leicaflex SL and SL2, the large condenser system is particularly susceptible to fungal growth given the age of these cameras. A clean finder on one of these bodies is a positive indicator of general care and storage conditions.
The Film Advance
Advance the film lever through a complete stroke and check that it returns smoothly to the cocked position. The advance should require consistent force throughout its travel with no tight spots, gritty feel, or inconsistency. Advance any mechanism through ten or fifteen cycles to check consistency — inconsistency that appears only occasionally can indicate an intermittent mechanical issue that will worsen with use.
Known Faults by Body
Leicaflex SL / SL2: Meter requires original mercury cell or compatible replacement at 1.35V. PX625 alkaline substitutes run at 1.5V and cause 2/3 stop overexposure — use Wein MRB625 zinc-air cells instead. The large condenser lens is susceptible to fungal growth after decades of non-use.
Leica R3: Generally reliable. The shutter speed selector detent can weaken over time; verify it holds the selected speed firmly. The meter window can accumulate debris internally.
Leica R4 (early production): Electronic shutter and metering faults documented in units produced before approximately serial 1,600,000. Always test all five metering and exposure modes before purchasing an early R4.
Leica R5: No major documented production faults. Light seals are the most common maintenance item on any unserviced example. The rubber on the body covering can become sticky over time — a cosmetic issue that affects handling more than function.
Leica R6 / R6.2: The self-timer lever can seize if unused for extended periods — test it. The film advance can develop a slight grittiness from dried lubricant; a CLA resolves this. No major electronic faults — the camera has very few electronic components by design.
Leica R7: The depth-of-field preview lever can stiffen with age. The taller camera requires a specific winder (the Leica Winder R) that fits the extended base; verify compatibility if a winder is important to you.
Leica R8: Early production units (serial numbers below approximately 2,800,000) may have the documented winder contact fault — check whether the camera has been returned for modification if a winder is needed. The handgrip rubber can delaminate on older examples.
Leica R9: Broadly reliable. The most common complaints are cosmetic — paint wear on the top plate is more visible than on the R8's different finish. Electronic fault rates are lower than the R8 in long-term user reports.
Where to Buy
The R-mount market is primarily a used market, and the sources available to you vary significantly in price, quality assurance, and recourse if problems arise.
Specialist dealers. Reputable Leica specialists — including Japanese dealers on eBay Japan, UK dealers such as Ffordes, and European specialists — offer the best combination of quality assurance and return policies. Prices are higher than private sales, but the premium buys confidence. A dealer that grades cameras accurately and provides meaningful return guarantees is worth paying for.
General camera dealers and pawnbrokers. Variable. Staff may not have specific Leica R knowledge, and grading can be inconsistent. Useful for finding overlooked bargains in person, where you can inspect before buying.
Private sales (eBay, photography forums, Facebook Marketplace). The widest selection and lowest prices, with the highest variability in condition and the least recourse if problems arise after purchase. Best suited to buyers who can inspect in person, have enough experience to assess condition themselves, and are comfortable with the risk of buying "as is." Budget for a CLA with any private-sale purchase.
Pricing: What Is Reasonable in 2026
R-mount camera prices have risen since the broader revival of interest in film photography around 2018–2022 but have generally stabilised. As rough guidance for European used prices in good working condition:

- Leicaflex SL2: €700–1,200
- Leica R3: €150–300
- Leica R4 / R4s: €100–200
- Leica R5: €200–350
- Leica R6: €650–1,000

Any price significantly below these ranges for a working camera warrants extra care in inspection — there is usually a reason. Any price significantly above these ranges requires justification through documented recent service, original box and accessories, or exceptional cosmetic condition.
First Purchase Recommendation
For a photographer entering the R system primarily to shoot film, the R6.2 or R5 are the recommended starting points — the R6.2 for those who prioritise mechanical simplicity and the specific pleasure of a battery-independent shutter; the R5 for those who value electronic automation and TTL flash capability alongside a strong reliability record. Both are widely available, accept the full range of 3-cam R-mount lenses with full meter coupling, and have been in service long enough that known faults are well documented and understood.
For a photographer primarily interested in adapting R-mount glass to a mirrorless camera, any working body in the R3–R5 range provides a suitable lens-testing platform at minimal cost, freeing the budget for the glass that will do most of its work on the mirrorless body.
