The Leica R4 is, by production numbers, the most successful camera the R-mount system ever produced. Introduced in 1980 as a joint venture continuing Leitz's 1972 cooperation agreement with Minolta, the R4 was based on the chassis and electronics of the Minolta XD-7 (sold as the XD-11 in North America), but with a Leitz-developed mirror box, metering system, and an entirely new body design. It set the compact, rounded shape that every subsequent R4–R7 generation camera would share through to 1997.
A Smaller, Lighter Leica
Where the R3 had retained the angular, heavier feel of its Leicaflex predecessors, the R4 broke decisively with that tradition. Following the trend set by the Olympus OM-1 a decade earlier, Leitz redesigned the casing, hoods, front plate, and controls to produce a noticeably smaller and lighter body. The film advance, positioned for thumb operation without removing the eye from the viewfinder, became a hallmark of the design that carried through to the R5, R6, and R7.
The R4 was launched initially as the "R4 MOT Electronic" to emphasise its technological credentials, although no motor was actually built in — the name was poorly received and quietly dropped by 1981 in favour of simply "Leica R4". A chrome finish followed in 1982.

Five Metering Modes, One Dial
The R4's metering system was, for its time, remarkably sophisticated. A single dial on the top plate selected between five distinct metering and exposure combinations, activated either by lightly touching the shutter release or by pressing the program selector. Selective metering read only the central 7mm circle of the frame; integrated metering used a large, slightly offset Fresnel reflector with a semi-transparent surface to read the full field. This was a meaningful advance over the R3's simpler secondary-mirror arrangement.
Variants: R4s, R4s-2, and the Gold Edition
Alongside the standard R4, Leitz offered the R4s from 1983 — a "Simplified" version lacking program and shutter-priority modes, intended to hit a lower price point while retaining both metering modes. A refined R4s-2 (R4s-P in North America) followed in 1985 with improved exposure compensation controls. Reliability and Buying Notes
The R4's reputation for reliability is mixed, and this is worth understanding before buying. Early production units — generally those with serial numbers below approximately 1,600,000, manufactured in Leitz's Portugal facility — suffered from a documented pattern of electronic shutter and metering faults. Cameras still functioning correctly after more than four decades have typically either been repaired at some point or were simply never affected; either way, they are unlikely to develop new faults at this stage. Later production runs, and the R4s and R4s-2 in particular, are generally considered the more dependable choices.
- Always test the shutter at all speeds, particularly the stepless automatic range, before buying
- Foam light seals are over 40 years old in any surviving example and very likely need replacement
- No TTL flash metering and no mirror lock-up — limitations carried over from the R3
- An affordable, widely available entry point: clean bodies typically sell for €120–250
- Pairs well with any 2-cam or 3-cam R lens for full metering functionality
