1968 – 1976
The originals. Entirely mechanical, built to jeweller's tolerances, with one of the finest viewfinders ever fitted to an SLR. The SL introduced open-aperture TTL metering to the system; the SL2 refined the metering sensitivity and mirror damping. Many collectors consider the SL2 the finest-made body in the entire R-mount lineage.

A pivotal evolution: the first R-body with aperture-priority auto-exposure, developed in collaboration with Minolta and based on the Minolta XE platform. Introduced the 3-cam lens standard that all later R bodies would use. Commercially successful at a difficult financial moment for Leica.

1980 – 1986
The most commercially successful body in the entire R-mount line. Smaller and lighter than the R3, the R4 introduced program, shutter-priority, and aperture-priority modes alongside manual control — and set the compact body shape that every subsequent R4–R7 generation camera would share. Early examples (serial numbers below roughly 1,600,000) are known for electronic reliability issues; later units are generally sound.

1987 – 1990
An evolution of the R4 with a significant new capability: automatic TTL flash exposure metering, the first time this had appeared on a Leica camera. Also brought a faster 1/2000s top shutter speed and a true high-eyepoint viewfinder with built-in dioptric correction. Widely regarded as one of the most reliable bodies in the R4–R7 family, with electronic faults considerably rarer than on early R4 units.

The purist's choice: a fully mechanical shutter requiring a battery only for the built-in meter, developed entirely in-house after the years of Minolta collaboration. The R6.2 (1992) refined the metering sensitivity and shutter release feel. Sold alongside the electronic R7 throughout its production life as the deliberately old-fashioned alternative.

1992 – 1997
The final and most capable electronic body in the R4–R7 lineage, and the last R-mount camera to retain any link to the Minolta collaboration. The R7 added fully automated TTL flash control, a digital shutter speed readout in the viewfinder, and automatic DX film speed sensing. It required a deeper base to accommodate the extra circuitry, making it taller than its R4/R5/R6 siblings. Sold in parallel with the mechanical R6.2 throughout its production run.

1996 – 2002
A complete break from the Minolta-derived chassis: the first R-body designed entirely in-house by Leica, with no shared parts from any prior generation. Its bold, sculptural styling — nicknamed the "Hunchback of Solms" by some critics — proved divisive on release, but the camera underneath was the most technically sophisticated Leica had yet built, with genuine multi-pattern metering, a 1/8000s electronic shutter, and mirror lock-up for the first time since the original Leicaflex. Laid the groundwork that the R9 would refine, including compatibility with the Digital Modul R back.

The final and most refined R-body, an evolution of the R8 with a 100g weight reduction, a new anthracite finish option, and minor ergonomic improvements. Compatible with the Digital Modul R back, giving it a path into early digital capture using the full accumulated R-mount lens library. Production ended in 2009, closing the R system at its technical peak.
